GOF: Chapter 2: Protecting Privacy

The Privacy acts are becoming more strict, the best way to say on top of these things is to stay educated and informed about all of the up coming changes in privacy acts and government laws. The Patriot act, these are new acts that allows the government to basically survaillence just about any and every thing they want. With the new technology being invented there will always be something new that is not an included communication innvotation to help people be watched by the government. There has been many time that the media has informed it viewers to be aware of the changes to privacy acts that the government are slowly changing that will continue to limit the privacy given to citizens. How will this information from the media that help to inform more people of the changes happening in their states and country if it is already hard to believe the media?

GOF: Chapter 2: More Privacy

The United States has been one of the countries that have done a lot in comparison to other countries in protecting their citizens privacy. They have implemented many acts to ensure their citizens privacy is ensured. One of first things was the creation of social security numbers, passports and identification cards. If you think about this many of these things are not to protect privacy it just helps them keep track of its citizens. Social security numbers are basically bar codes on humans. They keep track of where you work, bank, and where your money is spent even medical record. These records can also be sometimes considered to be public records because they are in government databases. What is the next step in government surveillance?

GOF: Chapter 2: Credit Bureaus

The idea of ultimate information are credit agencies. These companies have basically unlimited use of personal information of consumers most financial records. The three major companies have the consumers futures in their hands. Credit reports are sought after by jobs, credit card companies, car dealer, and most importantly banks. With these records they have the power of employment careers, the kind of cars you drive and even where you live. With all this power they still choose to sell personal information to the highest bidding companies for their mailing list. This just stopped happening in 2001, the question now is how are they making their extra cash off consumers now?

GOF: Is Big Brother Watching?

The government has always found ways to track and "spies" on its own citizens and even citizens of other countries. This was even before the technological era occurred. Before computers there were still ways for the government to find out confidential information that citizen thought they have one idea about. With the invention of computers and Internet it just made their jobs easier. This in some cases make people citizens mostly think... How do they get a hold of such valuable information without their knowledge? There are way too many disclaimers and privacy acts for them just too have easy access to these thing. Which makes you wonder... When these privacy laws and acts are passed in congress do they create some kind of loop whole for themselves for later access?

CiS Article17: From Virtual Communites to Smart Mobs

The thoughts considered from Mann and Rheingold have a direct relation to the upcoming times in technology. Throughout the article there was much mention of smart computers and how the technological advances in the world have made life easier but does need to be monitored by the citizens that use it. With new inventions such as wireless cell phones and P2P (peer-to-peer) computing. Some of the main focus is on peer to peer computing this was thought to be a problem because this can have a negative impact on peers which have no control over the other end of the connection, hackers can be saving some of their stolen documents on you shared hard drive without your knowledge. Have you ever though to consider by having music downloading programs and sharing files that it is as easy for them to access your music as well as your other personal files on you computer?

Chapter 7: Computer Crimes

With the creation of the Internet many positive things came... e-mail, blogging, online shopping, video conversations and many more things. This also opened the door for criminals as well. Since the creation and the overwhelming Internet use the growth of computer online crimes has increased. Being in discussion about Internet banking and shopping there is a HUGE number of identity theft cases that have came about. This later opened the door to hacking. This is basically can allow very intelligent people to in some cases to pretend to be a investment bankers, credit card company or other organizations that some consider to be a convenience to access their checking accounts and with draw payments. While this was occurring the government realized that this was and still is a huge business for criminals, their main focus it to find a way to catch and stop this from happening. Do you think that the convenience that the Internet brings is worth the headache of worrying if your identity may be stolen?

Hate Sites

While doing a project on hate sites and pro sites there where many questions I had to ask myself. The first was can these hate sites be considered to be encouraged because of our rights of free speech. These hates site are expressing their right of freedom of speech but at the cost of a person or business. There were more hate sites than sites supporting them. The project asked to find a hate site and then find a pro site opposing the hate site. There is no reason why there are more hate sites on the Internet than sites informing or supporting people. There can be debates about the reasoning and purpose of these site but the question is; Can these sites be constituted to be an expression of free speech?

The First Amendment Rights

The constitution in most cases is very hard to get changed but was created in the instantance that if the government needed to. The first amendments were created to protect the rights of the citizens. There are many new amendments that should be made to the constitution that just isn't getting approved. The government fears that if the constitution is changed through the process of amendments by the time it is will go into effect it will be too late or irrelevant to the current time changes. For example, if the Internet becomes obsolete if cyberspace freedom of speech amendment was too be approved it may be useless to that current point and time. In all actuality a chance to the constitution would be useful in all events because it's almost definite that the world of cyberspace will be around for a while. If you where a senator word you consider to amend the Constitution to reflect the technical revolution's inventions?

Radiohead's Album Releasing on the Internet

When Radiohead informed the public that their album would be releasing on the Internet instead of regular record stores their record label became furious, especially when they found out that their fans are going to be able to choose the price they pay. With the record labels and producers realizing that they are not going to be collecting distribution charges or royalties if they every choose to re-release their album, they can be considered to be going off the top. Record labels collect most of their money from the publishing and distribution while the artist doesn't make anything. With the recorded sales they have been reported to have sold 1.2 million copies, if each fan pays 10 cent they make over 12 million without having to give a big cut to their label. Do you think this is a new concept that more artist should start trying?

GOF: Chapter 5 Freedom of Speech

The freedom of speech has always been very important to people, especially in the United States. We have rights protecting our freedom of speech as US citizens. The creation and the development of the Internet has made the US a more diverse and opinionated country. The thought that the government in other countries are censoring what their citizens are doing on the Internet is a outrage to US citizens. Although there are somethings on the Internet that sound be censored for the use of children and some educational facilities should be decided by the parents or the owner. Would the Internet as useful as it is now if the government had the power to censor whatever they thought was wrong?

Chapter 6: GOF

There has always been copyright laws ever since the beginning when books started being published. After the technological revolution, and the invention of programs, CDs, DVDs and CD-Roms copyrighting laws have been more widely used for these creations. The internet and new hardware such as CD and DVD burners, and digital and satellite services allow subscribers to record television shows without needing and where to store it other than their service box. The biggest copyright case over the internet was the case dealing with napster and its illegal use of downloading free music for artist and producers. While this was in the new did anyone ever think of being in the wrong or discontinued use? Are people still “stealing” music, movies, videos, and other copyrighted entertainment ?

Response to You Bought it. Who Controls it?

This article brings many true points to the front face of the technological era. In the past recent years there have always been issues it with the copying of cd, dvd, textbook, etc. Because they are all copyrighted. Of course this is very much needed in the USA to pervent plagarism, but other than that there should be no other problems. As long as some one does not try to pass around your information, research, movies or music as if they created it there should be no problems. Cd and DVD are being coppied all over the world as we speak, whats the problem with making more if you paid for it legally?

ATF Agent

Being a ATF agent has just been brought to my attention. With a major in chemistry this could be a good career choice. ATF Agents usually deal with the selling of alcohol, tobacco and firearms in the USA. They also work very close with the DEA's and FBI's agency. ATF agents also assess all evidence at the close of an investigation and organize specific case reports that assist the U.S. attorney in preparing for trial. I also have a minor in criminal justice so this career can also help me expand my knowledge in other field that I may later choose to attend, but there is one down fall. Being a ATP agent includes working to find terrorist, would that be a risk factor of this career?

The Intelligent Internet

The increasing development of technology has broken many barries before and continues to do so. There are "smart computers" in the making to become basically a programmed computerized human mind, with its own thoughts. This can frighten many people who are afraid of new technology and other that just don't enjoy depending on it. There has to be some medium between the two. There are even devices that can be operated by the mind without any physical action.

Structure and Evolution of Blogsopace

With the creation of blogs there have been many new doors opening. The blogs allow people all over the world to see into a someones personal side. It is easy to read and understand what some are thinkin just by reading there blogs. Most blogs are common interest stories that people want to share their opinion on or just taking about life and what they consider to be important to them. By reading these blog communities are formed through people with common interest.

Making Yourself Understood

Whenever you do something the last question that you should ask yourself is; Can someone else understand this? By doing this it allows the readers and or trainee of the purpose of what they are doing. Grammar, puncuation, and comprehensiveness should always been shown when writing. It helps the reader understand better and allow them to get all the information you are informing them about. With the less excessive word usage of getting to the point of writing its easy to be understood.

Forensic Chemist

The art of science has always sparked an interested me so when I decided to go to Buffalo State I choose to have a major in Forensic Chemistry. Some research on this topic that can be found at (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forensic_chemistry). This website was create to be such like a encyclopedia. While reading there are descriptions of just about every job dealing with forensic science. The article entitled forensic chemistry explain the aspects of a forensic chemistry career. There are many different specific that can come from having working in this field such as a fingerprinting and ballistics chemist, fire and explosives chemist, and many careers in law enforcement. I would like to either work as and FBI chemist or ATF agent for starters and work my way up the career ladder.

Question 2.11

The use of reverse telephone directories have been published but
only on the internet. If there was to be one printed it would somewhat
conflict with the privacy of citizens. That the information is even
available on the internet in my opinion is a issue of privacy being
violated. On the other hand it is very helpful, I have used it a couple
times and it was very useful when you can remember a phone number and
not a name. If the printed forms of this reverse directory was to be
collaborated to be used on the internet with the regular yellow pages
this would basically be another thing that would be obsolete after the
invention of computers.

Question 1.12

Two jobs that that would be impossible without the invention of
computer are, all internet provides, and type of website designer.
without the use of computers all the jobs in these industries would be
obsolete. The invention of computers have made these industries and
the people that would in them millionaires. Two jobs that have been
eliminate by the invention of computers are many factory jobs such as
component soldered, and some jobs that run on car assembly lines.
Although the invention of computer have caused some jobs and careers
to destroyed it has created many more that benefit the world and
have lead to many more jobs that are based around this creation.

Article 2. Who do we Protect and How?

With the invention of new and more advanced technologies on computers there have been many broken walls on the issue of security. The internet took the world by storm after it was invented and now it is used in just about if not every field of study. With this happening there will always be somebody trying to cheat the system and get around security restrictions set forth by the government. Security setting are needed to run society when people think they are above the law that’s where the problem starts.

Article 1. Five Things We Need to Know About Technological Change

While reading this article the sense of true information crosses my mind. One of the five things that stood out was "The consequences of technological change are always vast, often unpredictable and largely irreversible." This seem to be the most truthful out of the five. When new inventions are created the older or past more seems to go obsolete within a couple months. There are always going to be bigger and better things in life and the ones who adapt to the newer things faster will always be the ones that succeed in the future.

"It adds up" Response

The article "It adds up" (#4) by Jennifer Loviglio caught my attention. Throughout the article it keeps emphasizing on the fact that new technology is getting expensive and required. Now in day this still stands true. The technology that many children have now it all was not available for children 30 years ago, and with change in technology the requirements change along with it. For example, Loviglio mentions the fact that her son has to have a graphic calculator for high school, and when she was in high school calculators of any kind where not even needed or a requirement. Still today, a laptop or even at worst a desktop computer is required by just about all students above the 7th grade. With the change in time the change in technological requirements will always increase.
